The Government of the Republic of Burundi has just learned with great emotion and deep sorrow of the death of Mr. Christophe NKEZABAHIZI, Cameraman at the National Broadcaster, his wife and his children. The death occurred as a result of an exchange of fire between criminal groups and police forces on Tuesday, October 13, 2015.
In these painful circumstances, the Government of Burundi extends its sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the family of the missing and their next of kin and to journalists especially those of the RTNB.
The Government of Burundi calls for urgent investigations to be carried out to know exact circumstances of the killings and establish responsibilities. Pending the outcome of the investigations, the Government of Burundi asks everyone to hold on and refrain from any form of speculation that would only serve the cause of those who are trying to disturb public security.
The Government asks those who provide weapons, supervise or finance the remains of the insurrection related to the election period to target security forces, whether domestic or foreign, to come to their senses and stop their macabre project which only bereaves innocent families, and bear in mind that they shall face the justice.
The Government urges again those who still hold weapons illegally to hand them over voluntarily, and asks the population to consolidate the joint safety committees in order to make it easy to the authorities tasked with the disarmament to remove these leading-to-death tools.
Finally the Government of Burundi expresses its condolences to all the families of the victims who lost their lives because of the weapons that are still circulating in the country illegally.
