The Government of Burundi has learned with dismay the dastardly assassination of Honourable Hafsa Mossi former Minister and until day MP at the East African Legislative Assembly. The assassination occurred during an ambush near her home located at Gihosha in the City Bujumbura this Wednesday, July 13, 2016.
Through this assassination, Burundi has lost a personality who has worked hard and who has particularly defended her country, Burundi, in the East African Community for its effective integration within that Community. This crime is perpetrated at the moment a Session of Interburundian Dialogue is underway in Arusha, Tanzania, and during the 27th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union taking place in Kigali, Rwanda. Burundi loses one of its most devoted children and her death leaves behind a significant gap.
The Government of Burundi expresses its strong indignation and condemns in the strongest terms this despicable act which is not the first attack against a targeted politician over the past few days, and which manifests itself in a new method of terrorism vis-à-vis of the current crisis under a form of murder and targeted attacks, apparently imported from outside owing regard to the modus operandi of these terrorists.
The Government of Burundi extends its deepest condolences and profound sympathy to the family of the Departed, to the people of Burundi she represented in the East African Legislative Assembly, and to the East African Legislative Assembly.
The Government of Burundi urges the competent authorities to conduct urgent investigations to identify the perpetrators of this murder and their potential sponsors so that the law shall be applied without detour.
The Government exhorts the people of Burundi to remain cool, calm and collected, and above all not to fall into the trap of this new and tragic provocation.
The Government appeals to those with illegal weapons to hand them voluntarily, and solicits the public to consolidate the joint security committees so as to facilitate the disarmament authorities in their task to seize these instruments of death.
May the soul of the eminent departed rest in peace.
